God’s Playground and the works of Norman Davies                          Started   10/21/2008

I yearn to finally use my Passport, and for Husband Adams and me to go on our first big trip to Europe.  Meanwhile I am becoming a Big Fat Know-it-all Arm Chair Traveler.

I love Rick Steves and am hoarding his shows from my TIVOing of reruns on the Create Channel [Local Cable Channel 310], along with a few Burt Wolfe’s and a lot of Lidia’s Table and Ciao Italia cooking shows.

But I do have a bone to pick with Rick Steves.

Its not how he views some of us “Ugly Americans,” and our lack of appreciation of other languages and cultures.  Maybe he’s got some point to what he says.  A few years ago, Daughter Adams told me how she felt that some Americans weren’t even trying to cope with the French, on the quick trip she made to Paris, during her mini-semester studying in Spain.

Its Rick Steve’s treatment of Poland that piques me,  and his failure to give proper credit to Norman Davies for his popularizing Poland’s apparent nickname, God’s Playground.

Norman Davies is an English historian who has written studied and extensively on Poland.  His two volume work on Polish history is entitled, God’s Playground: A History of Poland.
